We're back to college, lectures will be well under way soon and we'll be all focusing on assignments and their tight deadlines. It does sound challenging to say the least, however it's not all that bad, especially if you plan ahead for the tough times to come. The following is a short list of tips which may prove handy when navigating through this year's academic seas.
Tip #1: Familiarise yourself with your timetable and your syllabus IAS timetable are available here. It is very important to stay updated to stay updated with any changes which may happen throughout the year; so keep vigilant for the noticeboards where other important notices may be posted. The syllabus of your course is very important and it is recommended to go though it before commencing the respective units. It is also wise to carry out some preliminary research before attending lectures to better prepare yourself for assignments. It would also help in understanding the lecturers better. You can always refer to it when you're in any doubt about the unit concerned. Tip #2: Prepare your school supplies! For those of you who use paper, prepare folders with different, clearly labelled dividers for each of your subjects. Make sure you have adequate school supplies. AND DO NOT FORGET TO BUY YOURSELF A NEW PENCIL. JUST DO IT. On the other hand, if you're like me and prefer using your computer, then have special folders for each subject, where you can store your notes, reading material and any other relevant stuff. Tip #3: Stop Procrastinating! Procrastination gets you absolutely no where. Do you know where that is? No where. Yep, we all go through it. So, what do I prefer; staying up all night, absolutely exhausted attempting to write some stuff on paper in time for the 2 o’clock deadline and then feel sorry for myself because I got a bad mark, knowing that I could have done better; OR getting those assignments done, dedicating the right amount of time to focus on what’s important, getting a good mark and being proud of the effort I made? Definitely the latter, but, as we are aware of it - we do come across many distractions. So, what I recommend is:
Tip #4: Set your Agenda! It's normal and healthy to be busy with extra-curricular activities and responsibilities outside of school. Some may have dance or music practice, sports training, dogs which need walking, children who may need washing, families who need feeding. Even though our course is an integral part of our lives, it is not the ONLY thing in our lives. We need our free time too; time to unwind and relax from the stress and heavy commitment which college life comprises of. Keep track of your activities and dedicate sufficient time for them accordingly. Nonetheless, it is important to know your limits. Avoid over-ambitious timetables (E.g: overload of extra-curricular activities) as they might overwhelm you and cut your heart (the Maltese-ers out there will get this). Tip #5: Involve yourself There are lots of activities happening on campus which you could participate in and there are also school organisations, such as IASSO, which are looking for volunteers and new ideas. Student life at MCAST has witnessed a significant resurgence since student societies have been set up in recent years. Therefore, there is plenty of opportunity to involve yourself and maintain motivation. Courage in numbers. Tip #6: Get enough sleep You need to sleep. 8 hours per night is what you should aim for. Needless to say, it’s important. I won’t preach. Tip #7: Stay positive You’ll be graduating before you know it. Just put your mind to it, focus on the important things and just do what you have to do. My motto is, Let’s do this! Tip #8: Know what is required of you Be at school on time, do your best and just keep moving forward. So - there you go! We hope you find this article useful and good luck for the new scholastic year!
